Drive 9 miles east on 26 out of prineville to mill creek road. Turn left and drive 10.7 miles to wildcat campground.
The prineville ranger station claimed there was 2-3 feet of snow covering much of the mill creek wilderness, so we chose to pack in a few miles and day hike out of a base camp. The trail starts out at wildcat campground. From there the path follows mill creek up the canyon. There are a few stream crossings, so come prepared to get your feet wet. After about three miles the trail comes to a junction. One heads towards twin pillars and the other to wildcat mountain. We made camp here and chose to bushwack up desolation canyon. A ponderosa forest scorched by a forest fire several years ago and steep canyon walls give desolation canyon an eerie beauty. This canyon has no trails and should be hiked with caution. After picking a few morels and giving a few ticks a lift up the canyon we made a short bushwack to the twin pillars trail and return to make a loop.
