From Portland, take Highway 26 southeast towards Government Camp. It's about 1 mile west of Government Camp right along the highway and is just a large turnoff. With all of the snow I've driven by the last couple of weeks and the turnoff is covered w/ snow.
It starts off as a nice stroll into the forest. Eventually coming to an opening and crossing a rock slide. Right before the lake you will hit a few switchbacks. There is a loop around the lake and you can also continue up to the top of Tom Dick & Harry Mountain, which is another mile to the top and about 1000 feet gain in elevation. We attempted this, but got to a part on the trail that was very steep snowshoeing and w/ our rented snowshoes we were not very confident. I have since purchased my own and can't wait to attack the slope! The lake is an easy hike, but heading towards the top of the mountain is a little straining. Anytime you gain 1000 feet in elevation in a mile it is going to be taxing. Worth the effort on a clear day as you have a panoramic view of the Mountains as well as Mirror Lake and Mt. Hood.
