Directions

From Trout Lake, drive west on Highway 141. After 1.5 miles (from the main fork in Trout Lake), take a right (north) turn onto Forest Service Road 88. Drive this road for 4.5 miles, then turn right onto Road 8810. Drive for another mile (the large rock pinnacle in viewable from this road is Sleeping Beauty Peak) before taking a left, and driving another 5 miles to yet another intersection. Turn right at this intersection and continue for another quarter mile to the trailhead. This trail is very well signed from the roads and is not too hard to find.

Trail Description

From the trailhead, the path immediately starts its long set of switchbacks on its way to the top of Sleeping Beauty Peak. After about three quarters of a mile, the trail briefly levels out on a small, forested (viewless) saddle before beginning another climb towards the summit. After another quarter mile, the forest gives way to the rock face of Sleeping Beauty Peak and a close up view of Mt. Adams. From here, the trail switchbacks its way up the rock face, via some impressive trail building. After several more switchbacks, the trail tops out on the rocky outcrop with views of Mt. Adams, Ranier, the Goat Rocks, St. Helens, and Hood. This view is definitely worth the climb.

This hike is to an pld fire lookout so the trail is steep and direct. We have maintained the trail for a number of years through a cooperative agreement with the Forest Servce. The views on top are 360 degrees the hike up however is in 2nd growth woods but still a pretty setting. There is no water on tis trail so plan accordingly. the top is reached by a short scramble. Please use cautin on the top as it is fragile. Walk only on the rocks and stay off the rock walls as they are fragile. This is the busiest day hike in the district so it can get busy.
