Directions

From Sandpoint drrive east on Hwy 200 into Montana to 2 miles past the Noxon bridge. Turn left on Rock Creek Road #150 and drive about 5 miles, or 8 miles with a high clearance vehicle to the unofficial trailhead. The road in is well signed.

Trail Description

The trail to Cliff Lake is short (1.5 miles) and gains about 300 feet. Along the way are potholes to catch nice mountain reflections off of. Copper Lake is down to the north as you get closer to Cliff Lake. A short walk latter and you are at Cliff Lake. There are several nice campsites around the lake, that offer great views of St. Paul Peak and Rock Peak. The scramble to the top of St. Paul Peak is strenuous but well worth the effort. From St. Paul Peak you can see St. Paul Lake thousands of feet below you, as well as Rock Peak across the valley and Elephant Peak to the east. Chicago Peak is the peak you walk along to get to Cliff Lake, and is a good view from any angle.

Please update the directions to the trailhead, these directions are way off! It's 13 miles to trailhead, which is the end of the road.. medium clearance vehicle is required, but 2 wheel drive can make it, just as long as it's front wheel drive.. Just did this drive last weekend in our Chevy equinox.. Nice hike though, but as of 7/2/2017 there is still around 4 feet of snow on most of the trail, but it is hikable..

I hiked this trail in August in route to Rock peak. It's a beatiful area, heavily populated with mountain goats. At one point I had about 15 curious goats join me for lunch.
